ABOUT FILMS:

BIG BOYS | BIG BOYS
(Corey Sherman) US 2023, 90’
(in English with Polish subtitles)

Coming out of age is never easy, but sometimes it gets painfully complicated. For example, when Jamie’s beloved older cousin Allie brings her new boyfriend Dan on a holiday trip they all spend together. Fourteen-year-old isn’t delighted, but soon it turns out that twelve-years-older Dan impresses him with his skills. A special male bond develops between them, and for the teenage boy, it means more than he’s ready to admit to himself. Raised with the belief that homophobic masculinity based on physical power is right and essential for survival, he overcomes his complexes by reproducing toxic schemes. But deep down, he starts to recognize his true self – and Dan’s grown-up attitude is an important part of this process.

(Hannes Hirsch) DE 2023, 79’

20-something Moritz (Lorenz Hochhuth) moves to Berlin with his boyfriend. He doesn’t have a specific plan, he’s just intrigued by big city life. When his boyfriend unexpectedly breaks up with him, a confused Moritz sets off on a journey in search of new erotic and social connections, starting at the gym, and lets himself get carried away by the many attractions of Berlin’s crazy nightlife and colorful queer scene. He meets a group of like-minded young people interested in experimenting with drugs, and for a while they become his unofficial chosen family. In his feature debut, Hannes Hirsch explores dynamically evolving models of masculinity, and specifically the queer subcultures of Berlin that his central character dives into. Amid ever-shifting sexual, gender and identity constellations, Moritz sets out to establish a group of his own that might give him a sense of belonging and community.

KOKOMO CITY | KOKOMO CITY
(D. Smith) US 2023, 73’
(in English with Polish subtitles)

Poignancy, monochrome, videoclip-like shots. Black, transgender women are funny – D. Smith, the director of “Kokomo City” is one of them. Breaking a martyrological scheme, which is usually the base of narration for trans-stories, she tells about inseparable connection of gender and race, not only in relations with men, but also between trans-daughters and their mothers, who have to make peace with the fact that they “lost” their sons. Daniella Carter, Dominique Silver, Liyah Mitchell and Koko Da Doll are characters made of flesh and bone, telling stories about boys, family, sex, sex work, dreams and troubles without dispensable censorship. “Kokomo City” emanates with the honesty and wisdom of black, transgender women, giving them a voice.

QUEENDOM | QUEENDOM
(Agniia Galdanova) US/FR 2023, 98’
(in Russian with Polish and English subtitles)

Just like young David Bowie, she’s a starwoman, a creature from another planet – and the whole world is her runway. Queendom is a magnetic portrait of a 21-year-old drag queen. Gena looks like a stylized sculpture, making suggestive, dark creations from garbage, glue tape and make-up cosmetics – creations which she uses on her social media as well as in public space. She grew up in a town built in place of a Russian ex-gulag – now she’s present on the streets of Moscow with her radical show. This shameless presence is her way of protesting against the treatment of LGBTQ+ people in the far-conservative Putin’s Russia. However, her lone rebellion costs a high price, when she’s forced to emigrate due to her radical performances.

THE JUDGMENT | THE JUDGMENT
(Marwan Mokbel) EG/LB/US 2023, 111’
(in English with Polish subtitles)

Due to family emergency reasons, Mo and Hisham are forced to return from the US to Egypt. Here they can’t admit they’re a couple – it would be too dangerous in a homophobic, strongly religious country. These circumstances release demons from the past – seemingly modern atheist Mo feels threatened and ashamed at home because someone knows his secret. Fear of punishment for sins, of his mother who stood against him and of god whom he always hated start to take control over Mo. On the other hand, Hisham isn’t aware that his partner still believes that their relationship is a sin. Will Mo be strong enough to overcome fears and fight for his freedom?
